CAS' singles
Three singles from Calling All Stations were released during 1997, and all of them were issued in differerent editions. There have been a lot of discussions on the choice of radio friendly 'hits' able to promote the album, and many people miss the album's title track among the singles. Anyway, I have reviewed the catchy Congo, the less catchy Shipwrecked, and the melodic Not About Us. |

The Story of Albert - a 1980 live story
"This next piece of the show is all about a friend of ours, who's name is Albert. And Albert was a born loser. He once fell in love with a lady, her name was the Duchess. And she was really beautiful. And the Duchess was into S and M. But poor old Albert didn't speak Spanish or Mexican, and so she kicked him out.
So he went home that night very disappointed, very dejected, and sat down and turned on the television. Suddenly his life changed, because Albert was in love again. Albert fell in love unfortunately with the television set. Bit of a strange one was Albert. And it was a bit of a one-sided affair. And within two or three days Albert had to go in to hospital to have the glass removed from his private parts.
So, he went on a convalescing holiday, abroad, where tragedy struck again! Because within two or three days Albert was back in love, this time with his walking stick. Bit of a wierdo, bit of a wierdo. And I think you guessed it, in two or three days he was back in hospital having the walking stick removed from his private parts.
Well, Albert decided to give up this holiday as a bad job. And he came back to England where he entered a home for unsuccessful young lovers. It's a shame, isn't it? This was called Duke's End. But every cloud has a silver lining, and every silver lining has a cloud, and every bin has a liner. And it was in this bin that Albert wrote some of his easily forgettable books. He reckoned himself a literary genius.
But unfortunately he was a bit late on the boat because he wrote books like "Albert Through the Looking Glass," "Albert in Wonderland," ("Albatross", shouts someone from the audience), "Albatross" (big laughter and cheers from the audience). Then there was "Albert Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," "Albert the Space Odyssey," that was a big one. And a big hit for him came, a big sexual novel he wrote called, "Danish Albert on the John ."
Very big one for Albert and leads us very nicely and smoothly to our next piece of music, which doesn't got much to do with Albert at all. It is in fact some music from our album called 'Duke'. And, we have put some songs together from our album called 'Duke', which we have called for the purposes of tonight's concert - Music From Our Album Called Duke." [ ... music begins ... ]

Genesis on the road - Europe 1998
Last week, an email from Carol Willis Impey of Hit and Run telling us that the future of Genesis is still undecided. They may decide to record or tour some time in the future, but at the moment not even the management know what to think. Anyway, we're being calmed down by another box set - the second compilation of rare material should be out the first week of November 2000. We can expect a three disc set with rare stuff from between 1976-92, including a work in progress version of Mama with the group jamming in the studio. Let's hope for some really nice material, including b-sides, live rarities and hopefully some more demos. I'll keep you posted on further details. |
With Jim Beckwith down at the Farm
Finally we have some output from Peter Gabriel, this time his musical contribution to the show at London's Millennium Dome. This album is not a follow-up to 'Us' from 1992, but rather a musical intermezzo for all of us waiting for Peter's next solo effort. But it works. In the spirit from 'Passion', Peter and his musicians keep us following OVO's journey through life - from life to death. There are several musical highlights on the album, everything from abstract soundscapes to rhythmic and heavy pieces like 'The Tower That Ate People'. There are also strong contributions from old Hackett friend Richie Havens and Afro Celt System's Iarla O Lionaird. And of course, Peter is very present all the time. My guess is that his forthcoming 'Up' will not be too different from this |
Another side of Daryl Stuermer
Earlier this month, Daryl Stuermer released his third solo album - this time a tribute to Genesis, called 'Another Side of Genesis'. Genesis' long time live guitarist ('78-'92) touches jazz with his this album - and for a Spyro Gyra and jazz fusion enthusiast like me, I really enjoy Daryl's live interpretations of some of the most important hits by Genesis. None of the Gabriel era songs are played, though - solely stuff written during Daryl's years with the band. So, there are few "prog" elements on 'Another Side of Genesis' - but Daryl plays catchy versions of catchy Genesis. His guitar playing is very good - and there is a good variation between acoustic and electric playing. 'Another Side of Genesis' is definately another side - but I really enjoy it.

The Musical Box - back on stage
Early June, the Canadian tribute band The Musical Box played two shows at The Montreal Spectrum. Alan Hewitt reports from this spectacular event - and reveals in his article some of the band's future plans. I saw The Musical Box myself in November 1998 - and I know how beautifully, powerfully and authentically they interpret these early Genesis shows | read more |
