Here at the Stravinsky Auditorium, Phil Collins has finally seen his dream come true : playing with a big band. Before coming up on stage, he spoke to us about his enthusiasm.

Like Charlie Watts, from the Rolling Stones, Phil Collins has always been a jazz lover "It was when I saw Buddy Rich and his orchestra in '66 that I first wanted to play in a big band". But if he hasn't done such an adventure before, that's because he lacked time, he explained yesterday to the 'press' before going on stage.

Phil Collins wish over all things is to share his passion for jazz beyond one gig. "I know that the audience won't especially go to see a big band, but I hope that the younger people, by seeing me, will be interested in old big band records and will go to jazz festivals". The drummer isn't afraid of disconcerting his fans. " As I have a tendency to do lots of different things, they are used to such diversity", he underlined.

Yesterday's performance was even more unique because Phil recently had some health problems. "I broke one bone in my wrist during the last tour. Doctors told me to wait until the ache become unbearable before operating. I don't know if I'll be able to hold this physically. So, I had to re-learn to play the drums taking care of my wrist and the new arrangements".

That's a real nightmare for the singer, who's unable to read music. Who would believe in this? "The only way to learn them was after the other musicians recorded the songs. I received the tapes 2 months ago, whilst I was in the studio for my new album. This was a race against time, and I really had the feeling I was climbing a mountain".

Now that he's made it to the top, Phil is flying. "This experience is, without any doubt, the most exciting and fulfilling thing I've done for ages." The Englishman already has plans to take his big band to America and to release a "live" album of their concerts. When? That is a mystery. His new album, though, is due out in autumn.

[ ok.. there follows below the second of four translated articles about Phil In Montreux. This time the thanks goes to Felix Denis (age 19 from Quebec) who very kindly translated for us.

Thanks very much Felix!! :))

Phil Collins' Triumph

Becoming a major rock star at the end of this century, the ex-drummer of Genesis has an opportunity to make this night unforgettable. In 1975 when Peter Gabriel left Genesis at the end of the "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" tour, we didn't think very much of the future of the sympathic progressive rock band. But that was without thinking of Phil Collins, the shy drummer of the group. With vocals sounding like the beautiful Peter, the little bearded man left his shy attitude to push his vocals before crowds that got bigger and bigger, a crowd that not only saw a new flame but also made Genesis a new worldwide monster of rock.

Unable to satisfy himself with such success, Phil Collins, now master of his precious voice, went on doing several solo projects. As of spring 1981 the sensual melody of "In The Air Tonight", the main song from his first album, did well in the charts all over the world. The nice Phil had all of a sudden become a star and had to put Genesis on the side for several months to answer the crowds begging more for him. In 1996, on July 17th, the one who has combined in such an impressive way rhythm'n'blues and modern pop music, will be in charge at Montreux. A fine reward for somebody who has been for a long time considered as an entertainer now imposes himself as an accomplished artist.

so, there it is.. more to follow soon.
