Hi everyone!

I went to my first ReGenesis gig last night at The Grey Horse in Kingston, London. And an evenful evening it turned out to be for some of us!

I arrived there in time to watch on at the sound check, which was Firth of Fifth, and from the first notes I knew that ReGenesis had lived up to the hype that has been given on this list. Halfway through this though, we had a little scare where someone had complained about the noise level, but thankfully it was quickly resolved.

The lights went out, and then the group started with a great Watcher Of The Skies, which was followed by The Return Of The Giant Hogweed. I can't be 100% sure of the order, but they went on to play a wonderful Firth Of Fifth, The Musical Box and Can-Utility. Next came their Lamb Casserole, I just had to close my eyes at the beginning of The Lamb and it was so easy to imagine that it was in-fact Genesis themselves playing in a room the size of a Living Room in front of about 50 people. This was followed by Fly On A Windshield, Broadway Melody Of 1974 and Back In NYC. Next came another great highlight, the first time I had seen Supper's Ready performed live. I Know What I Like ended a magnificent main set with everyone in the room singing along.

The 2 encore songs included something I was dying to see performed, Ripples, and it lived up to everyone's expectations. The nights music was ended with a powerful performance of The Knife. It was a thoroughly wonderful night, and I am definitely going to make it to Putney on the 4th of Feb to see them next, and I also highly recommend that anyone in the London area who could possibly get to the next gig, should do.

Gary (hooked totally :-)

P.S. - about 7 of us managed to miss the last train back by about 2 mins, hope everyone managed to get back safely, all I can say is thank god for night buses in London!

I think I'm apathetic,
but I can't be bothered to find out

On a bitterly cold evening the faithful flocked to The Grey Horse in Kingston to bear witness to the very first Re-Genesis show of 1996 in what many believe is going to be a major breakthrough year for this wonderful Early Genesis Tribute Band.

I was particularly delighted that Paperlate's very own Sue Town (all the way from Australia) was able to attend the show and it was truly a pleasure to spend some precious time with her prior to the show. Indeed one of the greatest delights of the phenomenon that is Re-Genesis is being able to share Genesis memories with fans old and new. In the absence, for the forseeable future, of any live performances from Genesis themselves I can only say that this is an unexpected surprise. Us UK fans are most fortunate to have Re-Genesis regularly playing the music which is so close to our hearts and performing those classics so beautifully.......

The Grey Horse is the perfect venue for Re-Genesis, being intimate and brim full of atmosphere and the by now familiar full throated roar of approval from the Re-Genesis faithful greeted the band's arrival onstage accompanied by those dramatic opening chords to Watcher...

The evening's full two hour set comprised:

1. Watcher of the Skies
2. Return of the Giant Hogweed
3. Firth of Fifth
4. Can-Utility and the Coastliners
5. The Musical Box
6. Lamb Casserole (The Lamb/Fly on a Windshield/Broadway Melody of 74/Back in NYC)
7. Supper's Ready
8. I Know What I Like

Encores:

9. Ripples (this wonderful new addition to the Re-Genesis set was thoughtfully dedicated to Sue as it's a particularly special song for her.....nice touch guys! )
10. The Knife

I can say with my hand on my heart that Re-Genesis just get better with each passing gig, the power and precision with which they performed Genesis classic after classic taking one's breath away in a stunning display of collective musicianship. Mere words cannot really do justice to the sheer Quality of this band and all I can really do is urge any fan who loves the music of Genesis to catch Re-Genesis at the earliest possible opportunity. They will be gigging constantly throughout 96 so there really is no excuse if you live within hailing distance of a Re-Genesis concert to put to one side your prejudices and witness the band for yourself......

Forthcoming Shows:

4/2/96 The Half Moon, Putney
11/2/96 The Swan, Fulham Broadway
18/2/96 The Grey Horse, Horse Kingston

I understand that the band will be visiting other areas of the UK during 96 and there is excited talk of a major London show in the Spring.......

As for further expanding and exploring the Genesis back catalogue rumour has it that Re-Genesis are rehearsing Dancing With the Moonlit Knight and Dusk for starters!!!!!

All that remains for me to say is thank you Messrs Appleton, Hyam, Marsh, Melbourne and Protheroe for confronting our prejudices and for performing the music of Genesis in precisely the manner in which it's progenitors intended it to be heard........

The spirit of early Genesis Music lives on thanks to Re-Genesis and it is my firm belief that Genesis themselves could not fail to be moved by the beautiful way in which Re-Genesis approach their magical musical creations of yesteryear...

[ first a little bit on the Supper's Ready thread ]

>SR was around until the 1981/2 tour. The only time A&E were played
>alone was on the start of the IT Tour when it took the place of Cinema
>Show/Afterglow during the In The Cage Medley very early part of the
>tour. I guess too many of the new fans didn't know what the hell the
>song was.

Not so, not in the UK at least. SR was played up to and including the Wind and Wuthering tour (1977)- it was not played on the Duke (1980) or Abacab (1981) tours. It returned for the 3SL tour (1982), because the Milton Keynes reunion gig was already set up by this time, and they thought they might need the practice in playing it (I have this on very good authority, I was working for Genesis Information at the time!).

The Milton Keynes gig was the last time that it was played in the UK - the closing section wasn't used in our medley on the IT tour (bastards! - we'd heard about it and were looking forward to it!). That is to say, it wasn't played in the UK until ReGenesis came along. And are we glad they did!

Speaking of which, I know Simon has already written an excellent review of the gig (i.e. excellent writing, as ever), but what he didn't mention is the fun and games we all had getting home after the gig. We were greeted at the train station by a British Rail chap who took much delight in telling us that we'd missed the last train by about two minutes. It seems that I did quite well getting home at 3am courtesy of 2 night buses - but Simon didn't reach sunny Brighton until 6.30 am! I hope everyone else got home OK, and it was great to put several names to faces as there was a good turn out of PaperLaters. Special mention must go to Sue Town, who'd travelled a mere 10,000 miles for the gig - good luck with Tony and possibly Mike - hope it goes well down on the farm.

Well that's enough bandwidth wasted on my witterings, take care all.

Martin
