May I thoroughly recommend the recently released Genesis tribute double CD "The River of Constant Change"..:
It's a labour of love and as someone who has followed the guys since the '70's, through many ups n downs, I was utterly thrilled that the so called third wave of prog bands have paid homage to the one band who has always been TRUE to the ideal of being progressive in the correct meaning of the term...
The packaging is lavish (as is the price: #28!!) and features 27 tracks spanning the band's history but concentrating on the Gabriel years, unapologetically.
As to the inspiration behind this wonderful project I can do no better than to quote from the sleeve notes by Mario Giametti...
"...Of course, with time Genesis have, wisely, freed themselves from the position reached in the 70s, and have been able to reinvent themselves for a new audience, while still releasing some more than worthy material...nevertheless it goes without saying that their place in music history is deserved for their progressive...rather than their pop work during the 80s.
It's for this reason that on this first tribute album to the ...art of Genesis we have lingered more in that period, while still including some more recent stuff, and have let the covers be handled by young progressive bands from various countries. Groups that have kept alive and personalized their lesson from Genesis, reinterpreting the originals according to their own sensibilities; some didn't dare change the original for fear of making it sound inferior; some kept only the basic structure and then set off to reinvent their own song; some, finally, have remained in an intermediate area, changing as little as possible.
Everyone, however, approached the originals with a great respect, even reverence, producing versions which we hope will bring you to love this incredible and inimitable band even more than before."
There will doubtless be fans who will feel that the songs are sacred and that any cover of the classic Genesis material is bound to be second rate. Although this attitude is entirely understandable, if one approaches the album with an open mind you too may be as moved and delighted as I am that at long last musicians feel that the time is right to proclaim their love of Genesis heritage to honour them with a worthy tribute on cd (and as to whether this is official or otherwise is besides the point...it's been put together by people who adore this music).
I look forward to discussing this project with Mr Rutherford next week, during the next leg of the Mechanics tour!!!!!!
Right, to details...
"The River of Constant Change" is available on the Mellow Records label, catalogue # MMP 270B:

In case you're wondering, I do not have any direct involvement with the project other than my pleasure at seeing Sue's name as a Genesis contact and a plug for my pal Alan Hewitt of The Waiting Room, who first brought this project to my attention some time ago...
Perhaps I will get to see some of those wonderful precious pieces of music live again after all!!! :-)
I'll be most interested to learn what other fans think of "The River of Constant Change"...
